OUR
PLOT:
- Finally, after centuries of struggle, Thread was
defeated and all of Pern rejoiced. It was free from the threatening
glare of the Red Star and everyone agreed that the victory would usher
in a new age of prosperity. And they were right - for a time.
But
peace is a fragile thing and as the turns wore on the people of Pern
began to look to dragonriders and their grand, proud Weyrs with a more
skeptical eye. It takes a lot to feed one dragon, much less a Weyr full
of them - and for what purpose? Thread was gone for good this time and
while some riders found different ways to be useful others were much too
proud and accustomed to a different time. Candidates were becoming
increasingly scarce as well, and largely weyrborn as many in the Holds
preferred their sons and daughters to learn a craft rather than waste
their potential on a dragon. Even a wher was better - at least
wherhandlers could make an honest living serving as guards and watchmen.
Holds still sent tithe to their Weyrs out of a rapidly fading sense of
gratitude, but they were beginning to wonder why.
Faced with
becoming completely obsolete the Weyrs of Pern scrambled to reassert
their status in order to survive. Over time the Weyrs became more
aggressive in their relationships both with each other and with the
Holds beholden to them. They became increasingly controlling and
possessive of their Holds, eventually drawing up lines to separate their
territory from another Weyr's and guarding it jealously. Trade was done
at the Weyr's discretion and only with the Weyr's consent until
eventually any autonomy within the Holds was discarded entirely. With
this gradual cultural and political change came the pervasive idea of
dragonrider superiority. Weyrs were strong because they had dragons. To
Impress a dragon was to be better than a simple holder, to be part of
the ruling class rather than one of those were were ruled.
This
is the world Benden Weyr and its surrounding territory lives in. This is
the world they, along with the other Weyrs, rule. But not all is
looking well. Their Senior Weyrwoman isn't getting any younger and their
Junior Gold, though clutchheavy, has always been a sickly creature and,
some suspect, has recently taken a turn for the worse. The Weyr watches
the Hatching Sands eagerly for when she clutches, hoping to see the
glint of a golden egg. Meanwhile as the first bite of winter begins to
chill the air things are heating up outside the Weyr. Telgar Weyr is
beginning to toss around accusations of candidates Searched and
subsequently stolen from their territory and tensions within Benden and
Bitra Holds are increasing steadily as anti-Weyr sentiments stir.
